Votes have been counted for the company’s Charity of the Year initiative and the team at Sainsbury’s, Stratford are pleased to announce they will be supporting Newham based charity, Child Bereavement UK.

Over 1,000 charities are supported by Sainsbury’s stores each year through fundraising and volunteering and since the initiative launched in 2009, £11 million has been raised.

Child Bereavement UK supports families when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child faces bereavement.

The charity also trains professionals such as teachers and nurses to help them better understand the needs of grieving families in their working life.

Before the centre opened at the Stratford Advice Arcade in January of this year, Child Bereavement UK worked with other local charities and organisations offering drop-in support to children at a number of children’s centres in the area. This work proved successful since launching in 2012, but a greater need for support was recognised and the centre was therefore established thanks to being supported by The City of London Corporation’s charity, City Bridge Trust and The Peter Cundill Foundation.

Bereavement support practitioner, Tahmina Sharif said:

We are thrilled to have been chosen as charity partner for Sainsbury’s, Stratford and look forward to working with the team to raise awareness and funds. The support of the local community is so very important and we are grateful to customers and staff for their vote.
