Preparing and supporting children when someone is dying

This course will guide you in how to prepare and support children for a death in the family. Communicating and supporting children when a family member has a life-limiting condition can help with the bereavement process. In this session we look at pre-bereavement and the various factors which will impact on children at different ages.

Who should attend?

Suitable for all professionals working with, children and young people where a family member is dying, in particular those working in palliative care such as hospices, and also those in the education sector, charity sector and social services.

Learning outcomes

You will:

To gain a deeper understanding of the issues faced by children and young people when a close family member is dying
To feel more confident in support the emotional needs of children
To understand how grief theories can support you with planning valuable activities and conversations with children
To become familiar with a range of resources
To develop an awareness of the challenges of the work and the importance of looking after yourselves

We encourage prospective participants to consider their own experience of loss and how it might affect them during training. Our training is not usually suited to anyone who has suffered a recent, significant personal loss or bereavement.
