Fundraising for schools

Did you know that in the UK 1 in 29 schoolchildren has been bereaved of a parent or sibling? That’s approximately one child in every class. Child Bereavement UK works with schools to help ensure that bereaved pupils get the support they need.

Schools can play an important role in helping raise funds for good causes, and the support of your school will enable Child Bereavement UK to provide support to more bereaved children and their families. Our friendly fundraising team can help you every step of the way on your fundraising journey.

There are so many fun things your school can do to raise funds and awareness for Child Bereavement UK, whilst making a difference to the lives of the children and young people we support.

You may have ideas of your own but below are a few activities that schools can do.

Dress down day

Always a firm favourite - what’s not to like about not having to wear school uniform for the day? You could ask each pupil for a suggested donation of £1 per pupil for taking part.

Cake and bake sale

A cake and bake sale is a real treat for everyone – whether you like baking cakes or just eating them! Encourage your fellow pupils to donate some cakes or tray bakes to sell. We can provide you with branded tablecloths, bunting, price placards and posters to publicise your sale and use at your event.

Treasure hunts

Treasure hunts are fun for pupils of all ages, but they are especially exciting for younger ones. Pupils can make a donation to participate on their own or in teams. Think of a theme, perhaps one related to the curriculum, and organise the treasure hunt. Make sure you have an award for the winning team. Bonus points for explorer outfits!

Concert/Carol concert

Carol singing might be seasonal, but why not organise a concert at your assembly as well? Everyone loves to hear a group of children singing/performing, so what better way than to put on a show? Practice a couple of carols or songs with your fellow pupils and charge an entrance fee or seek donations. You could combine this with a Cake and Bake Sale as mentioned above.

School picnic

Ideal for warmer days, this school fundraising idea also helps bring everyone in the school together. Picnic fundraisers are fun and it’s good to spend time outdoors. You’ll need to find somewhere to hold it (somewhere on the school grounds is ideal), design announcements, decide on a participation fee and ideally get food and drinks donated. You could also organise a raffle to bring in even more funds. There are special rules for raffles, so please contact your Regional Fundraising Manager for advice.

Spelling bee

A Spelling Bee is ideal for competing as individuals. Each pupil is asked in turn to spell a different word. Competitors either speak their answers or write them on a board, whichever is easier for you. You can raise funds by having an entry fee or charging parents who come to watch. Spelling Bees are a super way to increase your vocabulary, learning while having fun with your friends. Start easy and then get tougher as the rounds progress.

Read-a-thon

This fundraising idea is bound to be a favourite with teachers and parents as it encourages reading for pleasure. Why not obtain pledges of donations from teachers, family members or parents for the number of pages or books read? The more books read, or hours spent reading, the more you raise.

Sports day

Probably one for when the weather gets warm when there’s nothing you want more than to spend time outside. Organise a field day or a sports day, set up a variety of games and sports and ask all the pupils to join in. You can charge admission to parents and other spectators. Why not seek donations of drinks and snacks that you can sell to maximise your fundraising?
