Gail Merrett is a nurse at the children’s hospice in Manchester. She attended our modular training course, and has since set up a bereavement support service.

Without the training, I wouldn’t have had the confidence, ability or knowledge to set up a support service. Most importantly, the young people I support gain strength and self-esteem, and their feelings are normalised.

I have used a lot of what I learnt in my training. The number of children I’ve supported who have had no support from their school is very sad.  People are afraid of death but it’s the one thing we all have in common. I believe all teachers should have bereavement support training. Staff at adult hospices should also be trained in child bereavement as there are often children affected by an adult’s death who have no access to support.

Without the training, I wouldn’t have had the confidence, ability or knowledge to set up a support service. Most importantly, the young people I support gain strength and self-esteem, and their feelings are normalised.
