Who is this training for? This training is suitable for anyone wishing to further their understanding of how to support those who have been bereaved, for example: education professionals, health and social care staff, faith leaders, emergency service personnel, and charities. We recommend that bereaved families attend our webinar: Supporting a bereaved child - for parents, families and carers. When can I attend? What will I learn? Day 1: Understanding the needs of bereaved children and young people An overview of the impact of bereavement. The needs of bereaved children and young people. How to work towards open, honest communication. How children and young people understand and react to grief at different developmental stages. Exploring different bereavement theories, looking at how they can be useful to support children and young people to understand more about their grief. The importance of self-care techniques, to ensure that you are well supported to meet the needs of the children in your care. Day 2: Complicated and traumatic grief A look at how grief can be complicated by other factors, including the cause of death. The impact of sudden and traumatic deaths such as suicide, homicide and accidents. An in-depth look at how trauma and grief differ. Support for a young person experiencing traumatic bereavement. Tools and techniques for different scenarios. Day 3: Grief when someone is dying An in-depth look at supporting a child and their family through a serious illness. What children understand and how to support them at different developmental stages when anticipating a death. Memory making activities in the pre-bereavement stage. Supporting a young person as the illness progresses. Exploring support available from Child Bereavement UK and other organisations, such as guidance and advice on bereavement policies and procedures.
