North Outreach Project

In September 2016, Child Bereavement UK received three years’ funding to improve bereavement support in four specific areas across the north of England to go alongside our existing work in Cumbria, Cheshire and Leeds. We were pleased to be awarded a further three years’ funding for 2019-2022. This has now been extended for a further three years 2022-2025 for our North Outreach Project which will increase capacity to support more families and children across the Manchester, Wirral, Bradford and Sheffield areas.

The North Outreach Project aims are to:

• work in partnership with local education, health and social care services, as well as with other voluntary organisations in the areas which encounter bereavement issues.
• map the provision of bereavement support and set up Networking and Advisory Groups to include members from statutory and voluntary agencies, together with representation from bereaved families. These groups will work together to identify local needs and create pathways of support.
• work to provide ‘drop-in’ information and support sessions for families, where gaps in support for bereaved families are identified, and, where appropriate, initiate Groups for Young People and/or Groups for Families, assisted by trained volunteers.
• work together to provide bereavement awareness training for organisations through in-house training sessions and annual study days in each area.
• be able to offer direct bereavement support for children and young people up to age 25, and advice and guidance for others who are supporting them.
• enable public, statutory, and voluntary agencies in Bradford, Wirral, Greater Manchester and Sheffield to make contact for:
  • Guidance and information on a wide range of bereavement related topics and issues
  • Details about the direct bereavement support Child Bereavement UK can offer
  • Signposting to other organisations which can offer further support.

The team also works closely with local schools to offer consultations and bereavement awareness training sessions to school staff as well as support with the development of school bereavement policies. For local organisations the team provides workplace bereavement training which helps organisations and employers gain knowledge of how best to support staff and their families.

Training

The North Outreach Project team can offer after school consultations for a specific incident, or Bereavement Awareness sessions to school staff. We can also assist in the production of a school bereavement policy.

We can also discuss with you specific training that Child Bereavement UK offers at our dedicated centres and at other venues around the country.
