When a child dies - supporting parents and families

This course helps increase your understanding of the different ways a family might grieve, their needs, and how to support them. It explores the impact on the family unit when a child dies and also introduces some related statistics and research.

Who should attend?

All those whose work involves interaction with parents and families experiencing the death of a child.

Learning outcomes

You will:

Explore the impact on the family unit when a child dies.
Recognise physical and emotional reactions to grief.
Be aware of the incidence of child death and what research tells us about its impact.
Gain an understanding of what parents may need when faced with the death of their child, and increased confidence in offering support appropriate to their needs.
Explore the considerations around communicating with a dying child.
Relate theories of grief to the experiences of the bereaved parents you encounter.
Develop your self-awareness in relation to loss, grief and bereavement, and the impact of a child’s death on you as a professional.
Consider ways to support yourself and your colleagues.
Gain information about Child Bereavement UK, other similar support organisations and resources.

Cost: £45

We encourage prospective participants to consider their own experience of loss and how it might affect them during training. Our training is not usually suited to anyone who has suffered a recent, significant personal loss or bereavement.
